What is Healthy Work?
Have you ever had a job where you dreaded going in to the office? Have you had a job that you loved? Can you identify specifically what felt wrong, or right, and how it affected your happiness or your productivity? Or your health? Sometimes it isn’t until we’ve escaped a stressful situation that we can see, in hindsight, the effects that workplace had on our mental and physical health. There is over 100 years of research evidence pointing to how and why work makes us healthy or ill. Reading about this research in the popular press is tricky. Some authors oversimplify (e.g., giving advice to merely focus on appreciating people, and the rest will take care of itself). Many authors focus on the wrong thing (e.g., reward structures like merit pay). Or they generalize approaches out of context (e.g., competition inspires people, so set up internal rivalries to ‘drive’ performance). In this talk, Katherine will focus on what the evidence really says and put the research on work to work. She’ll share what is known to make work healthy for people, what we know to avoid, and how we can design healthy work systems to make us all healthier (and happier and more productive).
